SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL OF NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE
Soroptimist International is a worldwide
organisation for women in management and the professions, working
through service projects to advance human rights and the status of
women. The word Soroptimist comes from the Latin words soror
meaning “sister” and optima meaning “best”, and loosely
translates as “best for women”.
Membership and Meetings in
Newcastle upon Tyne
We currently have 32 members and are actively seeking prospective
members who may like to join us in our activities. We have recruited
five new members in the past two years and would encourage others to
visit us.
The club meets twice a month :
The second Tuesday in the month is a business meeting which is held
in MEA House in central Newcastle upon Tyne.
The fourth Thursday in the month is a supper meeting at Newcastle
Civic Centre where we are able to spend more time socialising,
having a meal and listening to an invited speaker on a topic of
interest to club members.
All meetings start at 7.00pm and finish at 9.00pm.
We do not normally meet in August or between Christmas and
mid-January. |

Federation |
|
Once a year, there is a Federation
Conference to which nearly 2,000 members travel to listen, learn,
exchange views and debate motions. In 2008 this conference was in
Barbados. This year’s venue is Cardiff and will be in Manchester
in 2010.
The Federation includes many of the former Commonwealth countries
and is a likely and colourful event.

Club History
|
Our club was chartered in 1937 and is the oldest in the Region of Northern England. We celebrated our 70 years as a club in
November 2007 when the President of the Federation of Great
Britain and Ireland was our guest for a special reception held by
the Lord Mayor in the Mansion House and on the same weekend we
held a lunch at the Centre
for Life.
The club has produced seven Regional Presidents with one (
Evelyn Lambert) going on to be a Federation President in
1967-1968. For more information see the history page |
